Your Neighbor's Termites May Decide to Check Out Your House
Subterranean termites, the most common form, live below-ground in colonies that may contain several hundred thousand, and they may travel the length of a football field while searching for food. Your neighbor's termites may decide to start chewing on your house.

A Traditional Chemical Barrier May Not Be Sufficient
The standard treatment method is to surround your house with a chemical barrier. The idea is to repel or kill any termites before they invade your home. While sounding correct in theory, full protection is difficult to achieve. Hundreds of gallons of chemical solution may be required for the average home. Application may require drilling through concrete floors. Termites can travel through an untreated area as small as a pencil lead to penetrate a home.

Sometimes a Second Line of Defense is Needed
A backup form of protection has been devised. Bait stations can be placed at strategic intervals around the perimeter of the home. They can be buried or above-ground. The below-ground installation minimizes problems with children or animals.

The bait station may contain wood or cellulose material. Termites foraging in the area will find some of the bait stations and begin eating the bait. The bait can be treated with poison or left untreated. The poison is designed to kill the termites slowly, so they will have time to carry it back to the colony and transfer it to other termites. A fast-acting poison would kill only a few termites that happened to find the bait. The poisoned termites also need to survive long enough to communicate the location of the bait to their companions. They do this by leaving an odor along the trail.

If untreated wood is used as bait, it will be replaced with poison-treated wood as soon as termite activity is detected. The bait stations need to be inspected on a regular basis by a qualified technician.
